Garden Sleepers

( )

At Ovation Landscaping, we stock sturdy garden sleepers for landscaping projects. When you want to create a timber sleeper retaining wall, raised beds or defined boundaries, our landscaping sleepers are manufactured and treated for outdoor use, with consistent sizing and a clean sawn finish.

For everyday garden projects, our UC3 sleepers are excellent for borders, planters, and decorative structures where the sleepers are exposed to the weather (but not constantly in wet ground). If your design needs extra reassurance, we also stock U4 sleeper edging. The UC4 treatment is intended for more demanding external conditions, and the incising helps preservative penetration for improved resistance to rot and decay over time.

Sleepers typically work best when they’re secured, and our incised garden sleepers are ideal for creating rigid corners, bracing sleeper planters, or providing upright support for small garden structures.

Alongside sleepers and posts, we also stock eased-edge, kiln-dried, treated timbers in section sizes, including 47 x 100mm C16 and larger C24 options such as 47 x 150mm. These landscaping sleepers are useful for subframes, capping pieces and neat finishing where a smoother edge is preferred.

So, if you’re levelling a sloping garden or building a seating area, our pressure-treated timber range provides the professional-grade materials you need to bring your vision to life.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can use railway sleepers for garden projects that involve creating strong, straight-edged features, like raised beds and planters, lawn/bed borders and edging, steps between levels, and low retaining walls to hold soil.

We currently stock garden sleepers in 2.4m x 100mm x 100mm (sawn, green treated UC3).

The main difference between UC3 and UC4 sleeper edging is the intensity of preservative treatment. UC3-treated sleepers are intended for outdoor use above ground, where the timber is exposed to weather (not in direct contact with soil).

UC4-treated sleepers are treated to a higher level for ground contact, designed for timber that will be in permanent contact with the ground (or fresh water) and at greater risk of decay.

‘Incised’ garden sleepers mean the timber has had lots of tiny, shallow cuts made along its surface before treatment. Those incisions act like channels, helping the UC4 preservative penetrate deeper into the wood.

Yes – our UC4-treated railway sleepers for gardens are designed for ground contact, so they’re great for raised bed edging where the timber will sit against soil and stay damp.

Yes! Ovation Landscaping’s railway sleepers for gardens are a sturdy way to build a raised vegetable bed. For edible growing, it’s best to choose new landscaping sleepers and avoid creosote railway sleepers, which aren’t recommended for regular garden use.

Treated softwood landscaping sleepers can last 10–20 years outdoors, depending on site moisture and whether they’re UC3 (above-ground exposure) or UC4 (ground contact).

Generally, no. Creosote-treated railway sleepers aren’t recommended for domestic gardens.

In the UK, consumer use has been restricted for years, and creosote-treated wood mustn’t be used in parks or gardens where there’s a risk of frequent skin contact (and it’s also restricted for things like garden furniture and play areas).

If you cut, drill or notch treated sleepers, you should apply an end-grain/cut-end preservative to the freshly exposed wood.

Two liberal brush coats should maintain the integrity of the original treatment, and sealing the whole sleeper with an oil/stain is optional for appearance, but it doesn’t replace cut-end treatment.
